Runnymede & Weybridge Conservatives are sad to announce the death of Derek Cotty who was a councillor for the Chertsey Riverside ward on Runnymede Borough Council for 11 years until May 2023.
Derek joined the council after retiring from a career in television drama production; including 18 years on the BAFTA award winning police series The Bill. His TV credits also included The Agatha Christie Hour, The Benny Hill Show, and many more.
At the Council, Derek served on all the major committees and was Mayor of Runnymede in 2015/16, over the period of the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta.
Cllr Chris Howorth, leads the Conservatives at RBC, said: "At a time when politics can feels increasingly negative and personalised, Derek reminded us of the true purpose of public life: to serve our residents with integrity.
"He showed through his deeds that one can be clear and straightforward while remaining polite, gracious, and fair. His dedication to Runnymede was evident in many ways, including his service as Mayor during the Magna Carta anniversary and he helped commission and site the statue of Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate Runnymede’s central role in that historic event."
Derek was known for a hands-on approach and genuine concern for his residents. He gained a reputation in Chertsey for 'sorting' local issues.
Derek was a Trustee of the two leading Chertsey charities (dedicated to assisting the needy of the town) and a President of the Chertsey Rotary Club.
Although his physical health declined in recent years, he completed his time at RBC with unwavering dedication to residents, to the borough, and to his colleagues.
Our thoughts are with Derek’s wife, Susan, and his family, and we thank him for his friendship and service.
