Stoke d'Abernon residents have had their worst fears confirmed regarding the development of land which is accessed from Blundel Lane and surrounds the Polyapes Scout campsite.
Developers have stated that they are planning to build 250 homes on the site, in a new, sustainable neighbourhood, to be named "The Paddocks".
This would represent about a 40% increase in the size of Stoke d'Abernon. It is envisaged that there will be two new access roads from Blundel Lane, in addition to the existing track which leads to the Polyapes site.
These proposals have come forward as a direct consequence of the Labour Government's plans to relax the rules relating to building on the Green Belt, combined with Liberal Democrat controlled Elmbridge Borough Council failing to have an up to date Local Plan, and the drive to build more housing.
Conservative County Councillor for Cobham, David Lewis, comments: "There are still a number of hurdles which will have to be overcome before planning permission is granted and the development of the site can take place. I am opposed to the proposals which, if implemented, would permanently change the character of the area that we live in.
"Also, let's not forget that the massive Wisley Airfield development (approximately 1750 houses) has been approved and that there is another application at the Cloud's Hill site in Oxshott for an additional 300 houses - enough is enough!"
