It is with sadness that we must report that Cllr Mark Sugden passed away on Monday.
Mark was a dedicated County Councillor for Hinchley Wood, Claygate and Oxshott, since his election in 2021, and was a highly valued and respected member of our Cobham & Oxshott Branch.
Despite battling ill health for many months, Mark nevertheless continued to work tirelessly for his residents, responding to their concerns even in his final days.
RWCA Chairman Colin McFarlane said: "We could not have asked for a better friend or colleague than Mark, his residents could not have asked for a better or more dedicated representative. He will be sorely missed."
Originally from West Yorkshire, Mark moved to Claygate in 2007 following a successful international business career. He was elected to the Parish Council and later onto the County Council and advocated for his community with passion and determination.
Mark was a staunch defender of the local green belt, working tirelessly to ensure its preservation for future generations. His passing leaves an irreplaceable gap and is a tremendous loss to all who knew him.
At Surrey County Council Mark served as Vice-Chairman of the Communities, Environment and Highways Select Committee, as well as the Select Committee Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen group. His influence was felt across many areas and he was always driven by a commitment to his community's best interests.
Mark will be fondly remembered by his colleagues for his dedication, good humour and determination to serve his residents.
