Tories keep control of Runnymede council

THE balance of power in Runnymede remained with the Conservatives after Thursday’s local elections, as the Tories retained 12 seats on the council.

In the Blair versus Brown battle in Woodham, Conservative Michael Brown came out on top with 2,161 votes, leaving Labour’s George Blair trailing behind with 772.

One of the tightest races of the local election came in Egham Hythe, where Conservative Jonathan Wilson beat Liberal Democrat Dorian Mead by 181 votes.

Runnymede Independent Residents’ Group retained two seats to keep their number on the council at six.

Alan Alderson beat Tory Nicholas Prescot by 157 votes in Egham Town ward, and Margaret Harnden beat her Conservative rival, Nicholas Wade-Rogers, by 566.

Newly elected Virginia Water councillor, Parshotam Sohi, is expecting a different experience from his former life as a pub landlord.

Conservative Mr Soti ran the Crouch Oak pub in Station Road, Addlestone, until October 2007, and has now seen his career go off in a different direction by winning a seat on Runnymede Borough Council for the first time.

He also became the first Runnymede councillor from an ethnic minority after winning his seat by more than 1,000 votes.
